Senior Data Engineer

Data Engineer – BigQuery / SQL / Airflow
6 Month Contract | Sydney | Hybrid
$700-800 a day including super DOE
  
We’re looking for a Data Engineer to join a data-focused team on an initial 6-month contract, helping build, optimise and prepare high-performing data sources that power BI dashboards, reporting and analytics for a range of external commercial partners.
This is a hands-on role for someone who is strong in SQL, BigQuery and performance optimisation and enjoys taking data solutions from build, through tuning and refinement, to a clean handover for ongoing maintenance.
  
The role
You’ll be working with large volumes of data where performance really matters. The goal is to make sure data is well prepared, curated and readily available for BI and analytics tools - without users waiting hours for results.
  
You’ll be responsible for:

• Building and preparing data sources for BI dashboards, reporting and analytics
• Working extensively with BigQuery and SQL
• Performance tuning and optimisation across data queries and pipelines
• Reviewing and improving existing data processes where required
• Working with Airflow for orchestration
• Troubleshooting and resolving performance or data-related issues
• Ensuring solutions are well structured, performant and maintainable
• Documenting your work and handing solutions over to the offshore/ongoing maintenance team
• Working closely with senior technical stakeholders to understand requirements and deliver practical solutions

  
You’ll ideally have:

• Strong commercial experience as a Data Engineer
• Excellent SQL skills, particularly around query performance and optimisation
• Strong hands-on BigQuery experience
• Experience working with large datasets and performance-sensitive data environments
• Experience with Airflow and data orchestration
• GCP experience is highly preferred
• A good understanding of building reliable, well-curated data sources for BI and analytics

We're not looking for someone whose experience is heavily focused on platforms such as Oracle, Redshift or Databricks. This role is much more focused on BigQuery, SQL and getting data performing well.

Contract & location

• 6-month contract
• Sydney preferred
• Hybrid – minimum 2 days per week in the office, ideally 3
